Navy Strength Gin 50ml
The classic 58 Gin has a rating of ‘outstanding’ from the International Wine & Spirit Competition, a score of 5/5 from Difford’s Guide for Discerning Drinkers and inclusion within Ian Buxton’s ‘101 Gins to Try Before You Die’. The Navy Strength Gin is that same award-winning recipe turned up to the max – 58 Gin at 57% ABV.
Navy Strength is the alcohol level at which if gunpowder becomes soaked with spirit from broken barrels during the heat of battle, it will still light. So, expect an explosive blast of full-on citrus, peppery pine from the juniper, woody spices, punchy Earl Grey tea and a creamy sweetness imparted by the vanilla. This 50ml miniature makes a powerful G&T or Martini.
The home of 58 Gin lies deep in a railway arch in Haggerston, East London, lit by the warm glow of copper. Entering the vast brick vault, with its gleaming Arnold Holstein still at the centre, feels like stumbling into a place of worship. The deity here is juniper and the service is being led by founder Mark Marmont, a former dive instructor and boat skipper. He has assembled a small team – who bring a wealth of experience at the likes of Rebel Rabbit and Victory – and together they’re demystifying distilling, producing cracking gins with a sustainable ethos and building a solid local community. That’s why 58 Gin turned its stills over to creating hand sanitiser for the NHS, key workers, care homes and hospices during the Covid-19 pandemic; why they run a gin school; why they use foraged sloe berries, botanicals from a local church garden, and apples and hibiscus that would otherwise have gone to waste; and why their original label was designed by Mo Coppoletta, the founder of one of London’s most famous tattoo parlours, The Family Business. The name comes from Mark’s old address a few doors down from the award-winning ‘bar with no name’ at 69 Colebrooke Row, and he was influenced by this establishment and its star mixologist Tony Conigliaro when creating 58 Gin. Segueing seamlessly from one star to another, according to SpongeBob SquarePants’ best friend Patrick Star, “58 is like the luckiest number ever”. We don’t know about that, but what we do know is that anyone in possession of a spot of 58 Gin should be considered very lucky indeed.
