País Volcánico 2018 - A Los Vinateros Bravos

A Los Vinateros Bravos

País Volcánico 2018

A Los Viñateros Bravos are brave winemakers indeed – they sustainably craft low-sulphur natural wines from 100-year-old vines grown on the volcanic soils of Chile. But Leonardo Erazo Lynch – the man behind Rogue Vine, another Harvey Nichols favourite – has so much passion that it bursts from the wine in your glass. This organic red positively bounces with cherry, raisin, blackcurrant and wild strawberry, while its funky notes of straw baskets, spice and smoke transport you to a bazaar on an altogether different continent. Fascinating, vibrant and exciting, this is unlike any other wine you’ll taste this year. Serve with anything from tacos to barbeques, and stews to grilled cheese toasties.

Although described as New World, Chile has a long history of wine that can be traced back to the vines Hernán Cortés brought to the continent in the early 1500s. Those vines would come to be known as País. In the 18th Century, the politician, sailor and attractor of bad weather Vice-Admiral John Byron compared the sweet wines of Chile to those of Madeira. The wines that Lord Byron’s shipwrecked father was drinking were probably made from País. This grape played an important part in Chile’s wine until the country’s head was turned by Cabernet Sauvignon; since then it has been largely forgotten about. But now, in the hands of a few passionate producers in the south País, it’s back and has never been more exciting.
