Montefalco Rosso 2015
The Montefalco area of Umbria has been famed for its wines and olive oils since ancient times. Recently, it has become particularly popular for a lighter style of wine called Montefalco Rosso, crafted using Sangiovese, Sagrantino and the winemaker’s choice for the remainder. The pioneering Adanti family were one of the first to make wine from Sagrantino in this area, so they’ve truly mastered the art. Their own Montefalco Rosso is matured in oak for 12 months and also incorporates Barbera, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot into the mix. The result is complex and intriguing, with notes of blackberry, cherry, plum crumble and vanilla custard, tobacco, Mexican spiced chocolate, pink peppercorns, mint and fig balsamic. It’s a stylish accompaniment to lasagne, Sunday roasts, albondigas en caldillo (especially a vegan version made with figs, mushrooms and black beans), Chinese black pepper sauce and other rich comfort foods.
