Watervale Riesling 2019
95 points, “Exotic spice, talc and lavender over juicy lime… It’s a beautiful thing… No harm in smashing this one now, either.” – Gary Walsh, Wine Front
If you’ll allow us a small literary digression, in Tibor Fischer’s exceptional novel ‘Under The Frog’, a sadistic basketball coach declares that “they say you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but as far as I’m concerned that’s exactly what it’s there for.” We all judge wine by its branding sometimes. There’s nothing wrong with that. Luckily Adelina Riesling proves as bewitching and beautiful as its floral Rorschach label.
Definitely a winery to watch, the vastly experienced Australian wine critic Gary Walsh says, “in a very short space of time Adelina have become one of my favourite producers in the Clare Valley, and indeed, South Australia.” Adelina’s owners Jennie Gardner and Colin McBryde make wine very naturally. To put that statement in perspective, they admit that their most elaborate piece of equipment is their coffee machine. But the results demonstrate their huge passion; lime zest, wet stone, tropical frui, fragrant jasmine and something reminiscent of Provence all swirl up to greet you out of the glass. A touch off-dry but with refreshing acidity, fireworks go off when paired with Thai, Vietnamese or Chinese cuisine.
