Xinomavro Hedgehog Vineyard 2016

Alpha Estate’s Xinomavro Hedgehog Vineyard has previously been named a Wine of the Week on Jancis Robinson’s Purple Pages, which has “no hesitation in recommending any vintage of this wine”.

Xinomavro is widely acknowledged to be Greece’s finest red grape variety, and this one comes from the Hedgehog Vineyard on the Amyndeon plateau near the border with Macedonia. Cooled by the influence of two large lakes, this area produces fresh, juicy and outstanding quality reds, and it’s also an ancient nesting site for the local prickly population.

It tastes like a bowl of ripe strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, red cherries and plums, seasoned with a few twists of black pepper. Throw in a little vanilla and clove, a couple of sun-dried tomatoes, maybe a lick of wet stones, the silkiness of liqueur chocolates and just a touch of new leather shoes, and you’ve pretty much nailed it. If that sounds good, grab a bottle before the alpha hedgehogs drink it all and serve it with barbeques, stews, stuffed peppers or tomato-based pasta.
