Umeshu - Amami-Oshima

An exceedingly rare Umeshu. It's made by steeping ripe Kyushu plums in a kind of Japanese rum called Kokutō Shōchū for two years on the subtropical Amami Islands, near Okinawa in the very southwest of Japan. The Amami Ōshima Shuzo Company slowly ferment brown sugar, mineral-rich water from the Fujiko forest spring and koji rice over two weeks, this is then vacuum distilled to create a mellow spirit with real texture and a fruity aftertaste. Plums are then added and left to macerate. The plum stones impart an almond-like flavour and pastry notes, reminiscent of Bakewell Tart. The gentle sweetness is perfectly balanced by refreshing acidity, making it an excellent after dinner drop, a summery long drink with a dash of tonic, or a beautiful accompaniment to sorbet. The adventurous among you may wish to try an Umeshu Sour or mixing it into green tea. In Amami Ōshima Shuzo Company’s words, they produce drinks “which makes you smile”, and this one made us grin from ear to ear. These happy-go-lucky islanders are clearly not averse to a good time, as under their company contact details they also list a phone number for a mini golf club.
