Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore 2015
As primarily a fashion brand, this is difficult for us to admit. But the reason we love the brothers Pier Paolo and Stefano Antolini is because they ignore the fashions and trends entirely, as you can tell by that gloriously retro label. In so doing, these two heroes are keeping the ancient traditions and history of Valpolicella alive. They sculpt terraces into the slopes, build dry stone walls to keep them in place, wrestle old vines in all weathers, and farm organically.
Their Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore comes from the historic heart of the region and is created from a blend of Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella grapes harvest from vines, some of which are almost 50 years old. The grapes are pressed and fermented in steel tanks. In February the wine is fermented a second time using the leftover skins of the grapes dried for making Amarone and Reciotto. It’s then aged in cherry wood barrels for a year. As you can tell, it’s quite the labour of love. And that is apparent when you taste it; raspberry jam, morello cherries, wild strawberries, vanilla and cloves, you could just jump in and swim around in it. The richness imparted by the dried grapes requires a similarly rich food match, so think homemade lasagne, mushroom ragout, beetroot or truffle risotto, arabbiatta or puttanesca.
