Bien Nacido Vineyard Chardonnay 2017

94 points, “The 2017 Chardonnay Bien Nacido Vineyard is such an elegant wine… I really like the energy here.” – Antonio Galloni’s Vinous

94 points, “You can drink bottles today, yet they’ll also keep for over a decade.” – Jeb Dunnuck

93 points, “This is one of Jim Clendenen’s more iconic, and idiosyncratic, bottlings… A performance for the long term; cellar.” – Wine & Spirits Magazine

Jim Clendenen, the man and mind behind Au Bon Climat, was all set for a career in law when a trip to Burgundy inspired him to change his plans forever. In 1982 he set up the winery Au Bon Climat (now referred to by many as simply ‘ABC’), which is today one of California’s most celebrated wineries. Sadly, Jim Clendenen died at the age of 68 on 16 May 2021. As Jancis Robinson MW – who coined his ‘wild boy’ nickname – put it: “The wine world really is much the poorer without this brave pioneer.” Clendenen was a winemaker that was Burgundian in his sensibility (if the grapes aren’t grown in Burgundy then they don’t get into an ABC wine) yet resolutely Californian in style. Although we’re sure his vision and spirit will live on, his final vintages are bottles of fine wine history.

Au Bon Climat Bien Nacido Vineyard Chardonnay is one to stock up on and tuck away in the cellar. The estate has a “lifetime” contract for the very best blocks of Chardonnay in the award-winning and legendary Bien Nacido vineyard. Matured for 18 months in all new French oak barrels made by cooper François Frères in the Burgundy village of Saint-Romain, it was then bottled unfiltered. A Burgundian beauty displaying complex notes of lemon meringue pie, lime, apple crumble, tangerine, smoked sea salt, toffee apple, toasted hot cross buns, vanilla, hazelnuts, blossom, mint tea, lavender and chamomile. We adore this with creamy seafood pasta, dishes drenched in garlic butter, soufflés and even macaroni cheese topped with bacon bits and chopped chives. Raise a glass to one of the all-time greats. Gone, but not forgotten.
