Il Velluto Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva 2010
Velluto means velvet. And this is an iron fist in a velvet glove. What looks so gentle and unassuming packs quite the punch. The power, for something that has spent five years maturing in large oak barrels, is simply phenomenal. Produced very traditionally, the grapes are dried for several months on, creating a rich and opulent wine. It pulsates with raisins, prunes, chocolate, plums, cherry liqueurs, jam on toast, cinnamon, truffle and coffee beans.
The bottle includes a few lines written by Berto Barbarani – Verona’s most famous poet – that he scribed around 1943 in honour of Meroni’s wine. He alludes to these wines being “the family pharmacy” in these confusing times. A glass of red to cure what ails you and it will remain an incredible partner to rich game dishes, mature cheeses and roasted meats for three decades.
Based in the town of Sant’Ambrogio, 18km from Verona in the heart of the Valpolicella Classico region, Azienda Agricola Meroni create astounding wines, while cultivating one quarter of their land for olive trees and forests to maintain the balance of the valley.£9.73 per 100.00ml
