This Septered Isle 2018

Balfour Hush Heath Estate has released a ground-breaking, limited-edition series called the Winemakers’ Collection. The owner Richard Balfour-Lynn has given each of his three winemakers complete carte blanche to produce innovative new wines. His wife Leslie is an art collector and has enlisted the help of abstract artist Keith Coventry to create the labels. The result is some of the most stylish, intriguing and collectable wines to ever grace our shelves.

The Septered Isle 2018 was created by Fergus Elias. The name is a clever play on Shakespeare’s famous description of England in King Richard II and the fact that it uses all seven – or “sept” – grape varieties allowed in the production of Champagne, i.e. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Meslier and Arbanne.

But this is not a sparkling wine, it’s a stunning still wine that manages to combine the voluptuous feel of Alsace white with refreshing acidity and something decidedly British. It pops with orchard blossom, fruit skins, lime, lemon posset, greengages and cake spices. It's truly mesmerising stuff. “It is a wine which will undoubtedly age well,” notes respected wine critic Matthew Jukes, who concluded: “The Septered Isle is a collector’s item and this is not only due to the flavour but to the awesome artwork on the label.”

The family-run Balfour Hush Heath Estate is one of England’s premier producers. Located just 50 minutes from London and covering 400 acres of bucolic bliss, they’ve been quietly picking up awards for fun and slowly building a reputation as one of this country’s most highly respected wineries. This has resulted in them becoming the first English sparkling wine to be served on First Class flights for British Airways and being named the official wine of the London 2012 Olympics.

Their wines are made with pinpoint precision and always speak of the natural beauty of Kent’s countryside and orchards. The estate dates back to 1503 and boasts a very impressive koi pond, a vast expanse of woodland, a cider operation, countless works of art and three of the UK’s finest winemakers in the extremely talented Victoria Ash and the father and son team of Owen and Fergus Elias.
