Balfour Hush Heath Estate has released a ground-breaking, limited-edition series called the Winemakers’ Collection. The owner Richard Balfour-Lynn has given each of his three winemakers complete carte blanche to produce innovative new wines. His wife Leslie is an art collector and has enlisted the help of abstract artist Keith Coventry to create the labels. The result is some of the most stylish, intriguing and collectable wines to ever grace our shelves.
The Red Miller 2018 was created by the legendary Owen Elias, who in a genre defining career has been named UK Winemaker of the Year six times. The wine comes from a single plot of Pinot Meunier. The word ‘Meunier’ means ‘Miller’ in French, because on the underside of Pinot Meunier vine leaves you’ll find a flour-like dust. The ‘Red’ in the name is of course a nod to the fact that the grape is usually used to make white or pink sparkling wine, and therefore this is an incredibly unique red. Fermented on the skins and matured briefly in French and American oak, it’s one of the finest English reds we’ve ever tasted and will definitely appeal to Pinot Noir fans. Delicately aromatic and seriously sophisticated, it undulates with raspberry, redcurrant, hedgerow blackberry, soft spices, a hint of mushroom and something decidedly British. Giving instant pleasure, it would make a fine choice for Christmas day and all the trimmings.
The family-run Balfour Hush Heath Estate is one of England’s premier producers. Located just 50 minutes from London and covering 400 acres of bucolic bliss, they’ve been quietly picking up awards for fun and slowly building a reputation as one of this country’s most highly respected wineries.
