Victoria Ash Blanc de Blancs 2012/2013

£78.50

Balfour Hush Heath Estate has released a ground-breaking, limited-edition series called the Winemakers’ Collection. The owner Richard Balfour-Lynn has given each of his three winemakers complete carte blanche to produce innovative new wines. His wife Leslie is an art collector and has enlisted the help of abstract artist Keith Coventry to create the labels. The result is some of the most stylish, intriguing and collectable wines to ever grace our shelves.

Five years ago, The Drinks Business Magazine flagged Manchester-born wunderkind Victoria Ash as one of the top winemakers under the age of 40 to watch. They were spot on. After making wine in New Zealand, she got a job as the assistant winemaker at the much-respected Ridgeview in East Sussex and that lead on to her becoming Head Winemaker at Hush Heath Estate. Her wine for this series is an exciting departure from Balfour’s usually highly polished style. She has created a cuvée of pure Chardonnay from the 2012 and 2013 vintages, which has been aged in French Burgundy oak for 12 months and receives extended lees ageing and zero dosage (a potential first for the UK). Displaying both a rich autolytic character and a touch of modern funk, it will appeal to both Champagne connoisseurs and the Pét-Nat generation. Yeasty and leesy, it buzzes with energy, tangy lemon sherbet, brioche, kombucha, lemon curd lathered on heavily-buttered toast, baked Bramley apple and a salty and herbaceous combo reminiscent of samphire. Extraordinary stuff; quite unlike any English sparkling wine you’ll ever taste.

The family-run Balfour Hush Heath Estate is one of England’s premier producers. Located just 50 minutes from London and covering 400 acres of bucolic bliss, they’ve been quietly picking up awards for fun and slowly building a reputation as one of this country’s most highly respected wineries. This has resulted in them becoming the first English sparkling wine to be served on First Class flights for British Airways and being named the official wine of the London 2012 Olympics. Their wines are made with pinpoint precision and always speak of the natural beauty of Kent’s countryside and orchards. The estate dates back to 1503 and boasts a very impressive koi pond, a vast expanse of woodland, a cider operation, countless works of art and three of the UK’s finest winemakers in the extremely talented Victoria Ash and the father and son team of Owen and Fergus Elias.
