This is a classic Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, offering crème de cassis, blackberry jam, mint, red pepper, eucalyptus, dark chocolate, coffee, toasty oak and a pinch of dulse. Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon is very much its own thing - it’s not trying to emulate Napa Valley or Bordeaux. This one comes from the southern end of the region’s famous Terra Rossa soil, where it’s cooled by the sea breezes of the Limestone Coast.
The fruit is all estate-grown and is picked from the Dead Morris, Walker and Quarry Vineyards. Big on concentration, Balnaves of Coonawarra’s chunky red spent 20 months in French oak from top coopers and it’s the kind of no holds barred style that made us all fall in love with Aussie wine in the first place.
The Balnaves family has been in and around Coonawarra since 1855 but moved into the grapes game in the 1970s. Allegedly, Doug Balnaves put his first harvest of grapes in an empty swimming pool while he searched for a cement vat to ferment them in. This ingenuity, rawness and sense of family fun continues today. So much so that Australia’s foremost wine critic, James Halliday, has named Balnaves of Coonawarra a Five Star Winery every year for almost two decades.
