The Edge of Burnhead Wood 19 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky
The Balvenie has released a range of whiskies that tell the story of this much-loved distillery and their craftsmanship, aptly named The Balvenie Stories. The latest edition is The Edge of Burnhead Wood, which speaks of what the team behind it lovingly refer to as ‘The Heather Trials’. It’s the first expression to be made entirely using ingredients grown on Balvenie’s Dufftown estate – true Speyside terroir.
Early one morning back in 2000, the estate’s manager Dave Stewart (not to be confused with Malt Master David C. Stewart or David A. Stewart of the Eurythmics) took a walk to the edge of Burnhead Wood. He came back with a handful of young heather, which he took to the maltings, where they were added to the kiln. This imparts a subtle fragrance and delicate fruitiness to the barley and the final whisky. The result is classic Balvenie with a touch of dried fig, geranium, heather honey, woodlands alive with blossom, petrichor, dates, baklava, orange oil and spice. We only secured a handful of these hard to come by bottles, so don’t miss out.
For each whisky in The Balvenie Stories range, the distillery has created an audiobook of conversations between Global Ambassador Gemma Paterson and the workers at the distillery about that whisky, and David Stewart and Kelsey McKechnie sharing a dram with the people who made it possible. These can be streamed from their website while you settle back into the armchair with a dram.
