Etna Bianco 2018
Benanti’s flagship wine is the Pietra Marina Etna Bianco Superiore, which according to leading Italian wine expert Ian d’Agata (Vinous) “might be Italy’s best white wine”. This Etna Bianco is made by the same team, using the same rare grape variety (Carricante), just slightly further south on the volcano. But it’s less than half the price, making it a fine introduction to one of Sicily’s true superstars.
An explosive eruption of pear sorbet, crisp green apples, crunchy white peaches, flint, sea salt, mountain breezes and sunshine. A wonderful partner to nibbles, seafood, seitan or smoked tofu piccata with olives and green beans, and all those complicated things that begin with ‘a’, like avocado, asparagus and artichokes.
“Benanti’s wine making history is synonymous with Etna wine making history. In fact, the hard work and excellent wines produced at this historic winery are what catapulted this unknown part of Sicily to the oenological forefront. Benanti’s wines are among the best made on the volcano today.” – Wine Advocate
The Benanti winery was founded in 1988 on the northern slope of Mount Etna. The family were one of first to truly believe in viticulture here on the mountain. Although the Etna DOC appellation was longstanding, nobody had really made high-quality fine wine on it. Driven by a love of the local terroir and indigenous grape varieties, Giuseppe Benanti set about making his game-changing wine. Benanti is now one of the most respected names in Sicilian wine.
