Old Stones Oregon Chardonnay 2014
93 points, “The palate hits the nail on the head with that combo of intensity versus energy.” – Wine Advocate
93 points, “The wine is bursting with bright flavours across the board.” – Wine Enthusiast
17 points, “So fresh and lean and like a fine Meursault lieu-dit… So appetising and complete.” – Jancis Robinson
The organic and biodynamic Old Stones Oregon Chardonnay from Bergström comes predominantly from the Temperance Hill Vineyard high up in the Eola-Amity Hills, complimented by a few barrels from the younger vines in their Winery Block (Chehalem Mountains AVA) and Le Pré du Col (Ribbon Ridge AVA) vineyards. Aged in French oak for 18 months, what is filled into the bottles has a very Gallic feel to it. Think warm-from-the-bakery baguette spread with salted butter, plus white peaches from the market, lemon tart, grapefruit, citrus blossom, caramelised apple, fresh milk and Chantilly cream. As Jancis Robinson – who also highlighted this as GV (good value) wine – says, it will appeal to fans of Meursault too. Winemaker Josh Bergström says that this cuvee was crafted to compete with village Burgundies, but he has surpassed that in our view.
John and Karen Bergström moved from Portland to Dundee and planted a five-hectare vineyard as a legacy for their children and a tribute to the family’s Swedish heritage. It has now been passed down to their son Josh and his wife Caroline, and the estate has expanded to 34 hectares spanning four of Willamette Valley’s finest appellations. Focusing purely on ultra-premium Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, their wines have become some of the most sought-after in this up-and-coming region.£4.47 per 100.00ml
