198 Barricas Rioja Reserva 2010
Bodegas Beronia takes its name from the Berones, warrior Celts who inhabited the Rioja region in the 3rd Century BC. Suffice to say, you can expect a powerful and punchy style of red here, and one that understands its long history. Furthermore, as the winery was founded by a group of friends from a local gastronomic society, their long-aged Riojas unsurprisingly make exceptional food wines.
198 Barricas Rioja Reserva is a limited edition from the estate’s premium range. It’s matured for two years in (as the name suggests) 198 innovative barrels constructed using American oak staves and French oak ends, providing the perfect balance of the sweet vanilla and coconut notes from the former and the sophisticated baking spices imparted by the latter. The wine is then left to rest in the bottle for a further two years before release. What emerges into the glass is an intense red, pulsing with black cherry, damson, hedgerow blackberries, strawberry jam, tobacco, cocoa, After Eight Mints, balsamic glaze and spices.
A fabulous choice for pairing with the Sunday roast, slow-cooked stews, lasagne and Mexican mole. And in that glamorous gift box, it would also make the perfect present for any lover of big red wines.
