Master of None 2019
Wowsers! South Africa’s answer to Cru Beaujolais created by one of the world’s most innovative and in-demand winemakers.
Master of None is crafted using Grenache from Wellington, Cinsault from Darling and Stellenbosch, Pinot Noir from Elgin, Syrah from Swartland and Chenin Blanc from Voor Paardeberg. Pieter H. Walser has produced a whistle stop tour of South Africa in one sip.
Unbelievably delicious, supremely gluggable and downright summery, Master of None – the name being a reference to the 37 varieties BLANKBottle handle that make them a Jack of all trades – has a Pinot Noir-like weight, but plays out like a marching band of bright strawberries, juicy cherries, orange blossom, earthy tobacco, barbeque smoke, freshly ground pepper, horns, drums and good times. Serve with sunshine and friends.
Pieter Hauptfleisch Walser is probably one of the coolest guys on the planet. He’s a man who doesn’t know how to label himself. Winemaker, IT guy, marketer, négociant, surf dude, punk, artist, polymath… he’s all these things and more. He’s complicated, much like his wines, which also don’t give much away by their labels. His story began with a customer who came to see him and said she wanted to buy anything but Shiraz, because she wasn’t a fan of that particular grape. He listened to what kinds of things she preferred and ended up serving her a Shiraz that he hadn’t labelled yet. She loved it and went away with three cases. From there on, Peter decided not to provide too much information on his labels, so that the wine will be judged on just the quality and the way it tastes. He sometimes makes 30 different wines a year, half of which are one-offs never to be repeated. He travels all over the Western Cape uncovering an eclectic array of grapes and wines, he’s even made a blended wine by hooking himself up to an electroencephalogram (EEG) machine and measuring his emotional response to the taste of the components. His honest and experimental approach to winemaking has garnered him a cult following and listings everywhere from Chiltern Firehouse to Nobu, and of course at the OXO Tower.
