Blinking Owl OC Orange Flavoured Vodka starts off as their classic vodka, made with organic wheat grown in California and a little organic malted barley in the mass bill to impart sweet vanilla and caramel notes. Then, they add almost 60kg of hand-cut Valencia oranges from the Heritage Museum of Orange County and the historic Nisson Ranch orchard. These are left to soak overnight, before being re-distilled with more oranges, creating a rich, robust, sun-kissed and deeply orangey vodka. They don’t call it Orange County for nothing.

Set up by a group of grain geeks who had heard rumours about a legendary mid-century bar in Santa Ana with a neon owl sign that blinked, Blinking Owl became the first craft distillery in Orange County and the first distillery to open in the area since Prohibition. Inspired by the farm-to-table food movement, local sourcing, organic ingredients and sustainability, they create 100% Californian vodka, gin, several kinds of whiskey and aquavit. Their Head Distiller, Ryan Friesen, began his career at Journeyman Distillery in Michigan, but also completed internships at Black Swan Cooperage and Chichibu Distillery. The latter, conducted under the watchful eye of none other than Ichiro Akuto, is sure to pique the interest of aficionados and wise old owls everywhere.
