Catena Alta Historic Rows Malbec 2018 - Original Wooden Case of Six

£228.00

93 points, “The 2018 Catena Alta Malbec shows more evolution and ripeness than the 2019. It's varietal and floral with a mixture of red and black fruit, sweet spices and aromatic herbs. It has moderate ripeness – in fact, it's a little lower in alcohol than the 2019 – a medium body and fine-grained tannins, with good grip.” – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

Catena Alta Malbec is an assemblage created from historic rows within the family’s estate vineyards. If you want to get super geeky, it comes from Block 18 of the Angélica vineyard, Block 4 of the La Pirámide vineyard, Block 1 of the Nicasia vineyard, Block 6 of the Angélica Sur vineyard and Block 9 of the Adrianna vineyard. The subtle differences in the terroir of these blocks imparts a rich complexity to the wine. Think of it as all the instruments in an orchestra coming together to create a symphony. Sleek black fruits, blueberry, spring flowers, violets, forest floor, graphite, cocoa powder, crisp freshness and an almost Burgundian elegance; this is a masterpiece in Malbec. Stock up with an original wooden case of six bottles.

Catena Zapata was named “The World’s Most Admired Wine Brand 2020” by Drinks International. Established in 1902, the bodega played a pioneering role in the explosion of Malbec and in exploring extreme high-altitude winemaking. Nicolás Catena Zapata, a former Decanter Man of the Year, is widely credited with putting Argentinean wine on the world map and should be placed on a level with the likes of Robert Mondavi in Napa and Angelo Gaja in Piedmont. It is “the most important winery in Argentina” according to Wine Advocate, who also notes that: “the name Catena on the label is a guarantee of quality.” The winery is now run by Dr Laura Catena, the fourth-generation vintner and a graduate of both Harvard and Stanford Universities, who is fast becoming the face of Argentinian wine. When she’s not making wine or writing books, she is a part-time physician of Emergency Medicine in San Francisco – a suitably remarkable winemaker for an equally remarkable estate.
