Cabernet Franc Tannat 2017
Uruguay looks set to be the next big thing in wine. Thanks to huge investment and unique terroir the wines are some of the most exciting to come out of South America in recent years. This Cabernet Franc with a dash of the local Tannat is proof of that. Wonderfully food-friendly and layered with ripe plum, blackberry fruit, sweet spices, dried herbs and crisp green pepper, this unoaked style is dangerously easy to drink, especially if accompanied by roast pork or aubergine, mild curries, slow-cooked tomato sauces, barbeques and hearty Mexican dishes.
The family-owned Bodega Garzón was chosen by Wine Enthusiast as the New World Winery of the Year 2018. One sip of their wines or a stroll around their pioneering vineyards and it’s not hard to see why. In planting his vineyards, owners Alejandro and Bettina Bulgheroni enlisted the help of winemaker extraordinaire Alberto Antonini, which was quite the coup. A key player in the international success of Argentine Malbec and considered one of the world’s top wine consultants, Antonini now makes wine at the acclaimed Poggiotondo and Altos Las Hormigas, following stints at Frescobaldi and Antinori. Located about two hours along the coast from Uruguay’s capital, Montevideo, Bodega Garzón’s stunning and sustainable winery generates wind and photovoltaic energy, the roofs are covered in greenery and they are on course to become the first Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design-certified winery outside North America. As the biggest exporter of Uruguayan wine, they are the standard bearer for the whole nation.
