Single Vineyard Tannat 2017
Uruguay looks set to be the next big thing in wine. Thanks to huge investment and unique terroir the wines are some of the most exciting to come out of South America in recent years. Harvey Nichols instantly fell for this deep, dark red made from the country’s signature grape variety. Thick dark, juicy fruit (plums, cherries, strawberries) combines with dark chocolate, smoky tobacco and mixed spice; this vibrant single vineyard offering is a delight with duck cassoulet, salty mature cheeses, slow-cooked lamb melting off the bone, Mexican mole sauces or roasted portobello mushrooms. Bodega Garzón has an incredible patchwork quilt of 1,150 individual tiny plots, this comes from a slightly cooler vineyard on a steep slope, which gives it an elegance that is only heightened by more than a year in French oak.
The family-owned Bodega Garzón was chosen by Wine Enthusiast as the New World Winery of the Year 2018. One sip of their wines or a stroll around their pioneering vineyards and it’s not hard to see why. In planting his vineyards, owners Alejandro and Bettina Bulgheroni enlisted the help of winemaker extraordinaire Alberto Antonini, which was quite the coup. A key player in the international success of Argentine Malbec and considered one of the world’s top wine consultants, Antonini now makes wine at the acclaimed Poggiotondo and Altos Las Hormigas, following stints at Frescobaldi and Antinori. Located about two hours along the coast from Uruguay’s capital, Montevideo, Bodega Garzón’s stunning and sustainable winery generates wind and photovoltaic energy, the roofs are covered in greenery and they are on course to become the first Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design-certified winery outside North America. As the biggest exporter of Uruguayan wine, they are the standard bearer for the whole nation.£2.93 per 100.00ml
