Aalto 2016

93-95 points, “It's still young and tender, with peachy aromas, a little creamy and with a soft palate where the tannins are fine-grained... It should age nicely.” – Wine Advocate

Polished perfection. Aalto 2016 is balanced, stylish and powerful. This wine has so much to offer not just Spanish red lovers, but everyone from Malbec’s mates to Bordeaux’s buddies. This intense Tempranillo is crafted from old vine plots in seven different village in Burgos, plus two of the winery’s own vineyards in Valladolid. The former give the concentration and the latter provide the elegant freshness. Aged for 17 months in French and American oak, of which half was brand new, imparting the sexy coconut, vanilla and mulling spices into the mix. Brambles, liquorice, roasted coffee beans, pipe tobacco, barbeques, olives and black cherries vie for attention in a wine that is screaming out for steak night or dark flavours like black beans and chipotle.

Founded in 1999 by Mariano Garcia and Javier Zaccagnini, Aalto’s MO is simple: to showcase the glory or Ribera del Duero. Only around 250,000 bottles are made each year and it consistently sets the benchmark for Spanish wine. Tapping into vines throughout the region, it’s hard to think of a wine that better illustrates just how good pure Tempranillo can be.
