Vino de Pago is Spain’s answer to the French Grand Cru system. It highlights individual vineyards or wine estates within the Denominación de Origen classification that demonstrate unique characteristics making them worthy of this high-ranking category. There are currently only 20 in all of Spain and Pago Florentino is one of them…

In 1997 Florentino Arzuaga owner and founder of Bodegas Arzuaga landed in Castilla-La Mancha originally planning to make olive oil. However he discovered the ‘La Solana’ farm in the municipality of Malagón. Situated at the foot of a hill protected by a mountain range and facing two natural lagoons; it was ideal for planting a vineyard. The extreme climate of cold winters and hot summers keeps the rain away and the vines stressed into producing exceptional fruit as a defence mechanism. The first wine was made in 2002 and it only took seven years for it to achieve Vino de Pago status.

100% Tempranillo (called Cencibel locally) matured in French and American oak for a year Pago Florentino is revelation at this price. It really is one of those wines that you want to tell everyone about at once but at the same time can’t help thinking that it would be better to keep it secret in case it becomes too popular. Soft rounded and extremely well made it rolls across the senses with ripe red fruits roasted plums blackberries cherries toasted walnuts coffee dark chocolate and silk. Stock up because there really can’t be many better reds at this price point.

Bodegas Arzuaga Navarro is a Spanish classic located in Quintanilla de Onésimo at the very heart of the Ribera del Duero Denominación de Origen. Although only established in the 1990s this family-run business has rapidly become one of the most prestigious wineries in the world-famous region. Their luxuriously large estate weighs in at an impressive 1 400 hectares however there’s only 210 hectares of vines on it. That’s because the Arzuaga family believe they should coexist with nature allowing the pines oaks juniper olive trees wild boar and deer to thrive on the remainder.
