Cruz del Mar Cream Sherry is named after the beach in Chipiona the town in which it’s made. Although utterly delicious we wouldn’t recommend sipping it on a hot ‘playa’ in the south of Spain. The Cream Sherry style was invented by the British so it works much better in a colder climate preferably chilled and served alongside desserts pastries mature cheese pâté or festive treats at Christmas.

This wonderfully aromatic and vegan-friendly fortified wine is made by marrying dry Oloroso with naturally sweet Moscatel all sourced from trusted family-owned vineyards. Most Cream Sherry uses Pedro Ximénez as the sweetener but César Florido utilises his wonderful Moscatel. This layers notes of orange blossom jasmine wildflower honey sticky Medjool dates marmalade and plump raisins over the calming chamomile and rich nuttiness of the dry Oloroso. It’s then matured in a solera system further intensifying the toffee and dried fruit flavours. That additional ageing takes place around 50m from the Atlantic Ocean so you might also sense a pinch of sea salt in there too. This seasoning seems to lift any food Cruz del Mar Cream Sherry is served with especially stinky blue cheese.

Bodegas César Florido was founded in 1887 making it the oldest bodega in Chipiona. This port town in the province of Cádiz is famous for its massive lighthouse and the equally monumental things it can do with the Moscatel grape. Most of the town’s producers have long since been enveloped by the local cooperative but this bodega remains a family business. Today it’s run by César Florido not the founder obviously but a fifth-generation descendant. For a long time this ‘almacenista’ – a respected independent Sherry artisan – sold his wines to the big houses in Jerez de la Frontera El Puerto de Santa María and Sanlúcar de Barrameda. However in 1988 he began estate bottling and has rapidly garnered a cult following. Now recognised as one of the region’s true greats his Sherry should not be missed.
