Only 3,032 bottles were made of Las Alas de Frontonio 2019. This rare and innovative blend of Garnacha and Macabeo comes from 80-year-old vines grown sustainably in mountain vineyards.

The up-and-coming Bodegas Frontonio is gaining plaudits throughout the world, and it’s not hard to see why when you taste this. It pours a pale ruby colour, with aromas of redcurrants, violets and oregano. On the palate you’ll discover strawberry, more redcurrant, raspberry, thyme, menthol, white pepper, clove and toasting notes from its 14 months in oak. Dry and fresh, Las Alas de Frontonio 2019 is an intense red, but there’s also something hauntingly beautiful and ethereal about it. This is how good wine can be when it’s made by an actual Master of Wine, and it will certainly appeal to Burgundy fans.

Bodegas Frontonio was created by three friends: winemaker Fernando Mora MW (who made his first wine in his apartment’s bathtub), the sporty oenologist Mario López (who grew up in a winery), and international business lawyer Francisco Latasa (who looks after everything else). They named their winery after Saint Frontonio, the Patron Saint of Épila. According to legend, Frontonio was beheaded by the Romans and his head was thrown into the River Ebro near Zaragoza. However, it was later found upstream on the bank of the River Jalón. Although quite a macabre story, it’s strangely fitting for a project that is also going against the current. Valdejalón does not have a Denominación de Origen classification, it is arguably the least well-known region in Aragón. These garage wines are therefore sold under the ‘Vino de la Tierra’ designation but are so much more than that classification suggests.
