No protected designation of origin, no vintage and no specific grape varieties, Revoltijo IX is garage wine at its finest.

Revoltijo means ‘jumble’, and that’s because this wine is a mixture of grapes (Garnacha, Macabeo and others) and vintages (2019 to 2021). There’s an intriguing natural wine funk on the nose, followed by fresh strawberry, crunchy redcurrant skin tannins, mountain freshness and an elegant minerality, creating a very daring red indeed. We’re going to be stocking up on this strawberry-laced delight for barbeque season.

Bodegas Frontonio was created by three friends: winemaker Fernando Mora MW (who made his first wine in his apartment’s bathtub), the sporty oenologist Mario López (who grew up in a winery), and international business lawyer Francisco Latasa (who looks after everything else). They named their winery after Saint Frontonio, the Patron Saint of Épila. According to legend, Frontonio was beheaded by the Romans and his head was thrown into the River Ebro near Zaragoza. However, it was later found upstream on the bank of the River Jalón. Although quite a macabre story, it’s strangely fitting for a project that is also going against the current. Valdejalón does not have a Denominación de Origen classification, it is arguably the least well-known region in Aragón. These garage wines are therefore sold under the ‘Vino de la Tierra’ designation but are so much more than that classification suggests.
