Tragolargo means “big gulp”, and that’s exactly what you’re going to want to take.
The bespectacled ostrich on the label appears to have tied itself a tight neckerchief to prevent too big a gulp being taken. But the problem is, this Monastrell (aka Mourvèdre) from Alicante is just too quaffable. This natural wine is vegan-friendly, organic and made with no added yeasts, sulphur or oak; that way the Monastrell do its majestic thing. Grippy, dark and juicy, each delicious swallow of Tragolargo lingers for such a long time it feels like you’ve got the elongated neck of an ostrich. Dark blackberry, tangy damson, dusty cherry, raspberry, spice, earth, thyme and rosemary; it’s classic flavour profile makes a wonderful partner to comfort food, barbeques, pizza, rich Chinese dishes and midweek evenings.
The grapes come from more than 45-year-old vines on the Casa Balaguer Estate in Villena, which was set up by Bernabé Navarra. The man behind that enterprise, the highly respected Rafa Bernabé, was one of the pioneers of Alicante’s winemaking revival. In 2017, the year before this wine was made, those fantastic vineyards were bought by a dynamic young couple called Andres Carull and Marta Ribera. Having already made a name for themselves with the garage wines they make at Bodegas Vinessens, they’ve now added Rafa’s everyday drinking wine, Tragolargo, to their portfolio. Whatever you do, don’t bury your head in the sand when it comes to this stunning value everyday red; go ahead and take a big gulp.£1.67 per 100.00ml
