Chocolate Block has always been a cult wine, and now it's available in a massive Jeroboam. Swartland is the region that made South African wine cool. This is third vintage of Boekenhoutskloof’s Chocolate Block made using 100% Swartland fruit, and something has changed.

According to Jancis Robinson “the style of this popular wine has definitely evolved” and is “now much more serious”. There has clearly been a stylistic maturing over the last couple of years, with wine critic Neal Martin noting: “This is much more detailed and classic in style than previous vintages… This is a very impressive wine, to the point where I feel that ‘The Chocolate Block’ no longer reflects the style of the wine… Bravo.”

A blend of Syrah, Grenache, Cinsault, Cabernet Sauvignon and Viognier, aged for over 12 months in barrels of different sizes and ages depending upon the grapes. Although the backbone is still Syrah, this vintage ramps up the Grenache and Cinsault, providing a little more elegance, redder fruit and floral notes. Pulling the cork, you’ll discover a new take on the Chocolate Block concept, which is fresher and livelier. Yes, it still hints to that dark chocolate, black olive, biltong, blackberry and cigar box character, but now it also has an undulating undercurrent of raspberry jam, wild strawberries, rose petals, violets, orange peel and, dare we say it, elegance. It feels like a wine that no longer needs to be laid down for so long – although it will continue to improve for a decade or more – so crack on into it now.

Established in 1776 and renovated in 1993, Boekenhoutskloof now defines Franschhoek. When the maverick Marc Kent isn’t making some of South Africa’s finest wines, he’s looking after the local flora and fauna, including a rare plant only found at Boekenhoutskloof and the neighbouring farm - not to mention the local porcupine population.
