B13 Blanc de Noirs Champagne 2013
Thirteen, unlucky for some? But not for Bollinger or anyone lucky enough to capture one of these limited-edition bottles…
B13 is a brand-new Blanc de Noirs from the turbulent 2013 vintage. With snows and frosts through the winter, rain in the spring and then an extremely hot summer studded with violent thunderstorms and finished with a very late harvest, many Champagne houses struggled in this challenging growing season. However, the combination of Bollinger’s attention to detail and sustainable vineyard management allows them to create exceptional wines even in tricky years, as this cuvée proves.
Famed for their Pinot Noir, Bollinger has focused on this grape variety from five different crus. B13 (standing for Bollinger 2013) is comprised of 92% Grand Cru and 8% Premier Cru fruit, and it has been aged on the lees (the spent yeast that gives Champagne its nutty and brioche notes) for seven long years. What emerges from the bottle is rich, complex and highly aromatic. Despite being made from Pinot Noir, there’s little sign of red fruit notes one might expect. Instead, this is all juicy pear, almond croissant, Mirabelle plum, peach, candied lemon peel, smoky nuts, tarte Tatin and sea salt caramel. It comes packaged in a 100% recyclable case, made of mostly recycle materials, to reflect that Bollinger’s commitment to the environment goes beyond just the vineyard.
We’d recommend drinking it while watching the parkour-inspired French film Banlieue 13 (produced by Luc Besson and also known as B13 or sometimes District 13), which is almost as thrilling, high octane and action packed as the wine itself.
