Receiving 91 points from both Wine Enthusiast and Vinous, Bonny Doon’s Le Cigare Blanc from the Beeswax Vineyard is all about energy and focus. A steely Rhône-style blend of Roussanne, Grenache Blanc and Picpoul, it paints an elegant picture of wet stones, lime zest, peaches, tangerine, marmalade and juicy tropical fruit. But it’s the vim and vigour that gets you; if you hold it up to your ear you almost expect to hear it buzzing like overhead power lines. Serve it alongside food that buzzes with the same vibrancy: tacos, mature cheeses, ramen, tapas, crispy rosti, baked crab or steamed broccoli flash-fried with garlic and chilli.
Founded by the legendary Randall Grahm in the bucolic Santa Cruz hamlet of Bonny Doon in the heartland of New Age thinking, Bonny Doon vineyard has a not-so-surprising history of idealism and innovation and is known for strikingly original wines made for lesser-known (though no less noble) grape varieties. Bonny Doon Vineyard made its mark with pioneering work with Rhône varieties, innovative production techniques, and imaginative marketing. Since the adoption of biodynamic farming practices in 2004 and the radical slimming down of product portfolio and case production, the wines have become even more focussed, complex and energetic.
