Love Rosé 2017
Pure California love. This natural wine is made with love and fills the drinker with all kinds of amorous feelings. Behind the label, all patterned with tiny hearts, lies a wine to fall head over heels for. So it’s quite aptly named Love Rosé.
Broc Cellars have created a pink masterpiece filled with crunchy watermelon, tangy grapefruit and intriguing spices. The wine is predominantly made from Valdiguié – a grape originally from the South of France that was for a long time mistaken in California for the Gamay used in Beaujolais – with a splash of Zinfandel and the comedically named Bastardo. The result is wonderfully crisp and summery and is as happy alongside any kind of food as it is just sipped on its own. We love it alongside Vietnamese summer rolls, Caprese salad and grilled shrimp with mango salsa.
Most wineries can be found in idyllic locations surrounded by verdant rolling vineyards and peaceful wildlife. But Broc Cellars is not your average producer. This is an urban winery located in the heart of the city of Berkeley that is growing a cult reputation in California. Across the road, rather than neat rows of vines, you’ll find a North Face shop and a motorcycle garage, then a block down towards the railway line there’s a furniture store, amusingly called Teak Me Home. In these metropolitan surroundings, Chris Brockway and his team of young winemakers are crafting incredible wines from all kinds of grapes sourced from vineyards all over the state. Most of the growers they work farm sustainably using no synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fungicides or fertilisers. Their experimental natural wines are made using spontaneous fermentation caused by native yeasts, and little or no sulphur is added. This movement is the wine world’s hot topic and when you taste them you’ll see why the wines are being listed in top restaurants and raved about in the pages of GQ and The New York Times.
