Barbera d'Alba 2016
The respected critic and Italian wine expert James Suckling awarded this Barbera d’Alba 93 points and praised the “loads of blackberries and blueberries here with citrus peel and flowers.”
It’s a cracking introduction to this legendary estate. Often referred to as the ‘Genius of Neive’, the bespectacled Bruno Giacosa was famed for his ability to select the finest fruit, and it was a sad loss to the fine wine world when he passed away in January 2018. Luckily for every lover of great red wine, in the words of Decanter Magazine, “his style and standards are being maintained by his daughter Bruna.”
Rich and expressive, this really packs a punch for its price. Dense and dark, it’s meatiness, spice and fruit are kept in check by its vivid acidity. All of which makes for an incredible food wine; it’s certainly become a go-to for us when cooking grilled meats, roasted vegetables, homemade calzone, rustic stews and tomato sauces studded with black olives.
