Barolo Faletto 2015
98 points, “Superb aromas of ripe fruit such as plums and berries with peaches and tar. Very intense. Full body, great depth and density. Incredible richness and power with superb length and persistence. One of the most dense and vertical Fallettos I have tasted.” – James Suckling
2015 was “an exceptional vintage” (Jancis Robinson) in Piedmont, which ratchets up the demand for top Barolo like this massively. Famed for his ability to select the finest fruit, the bespectacled Bruno Giacosa was a sad loss to the fine wine world when he passed away in January 2018, making wines like this even more sought-after. Crafted from the estate’s own vineyards, only 7236 bottles of Falletto Barolo were made, the majority of which were long ago squirrelled away into the cellars of collectors.
The Falletto vineyard is iconic in Langhe. This natural amphitheatre protects the low-yielding vines, creating an optimum microclimate. Dense and rich, expect lots of cherry, tobacco, plum crumble and a glorious combination of tar and salt, almost as if the smell of a new road being laid in the distance is being wafted towards you on a sea breeze. This is the kind of wine that is a joy on its own but also pairs stunningly with the flavours of truffles, wild mushrooms or game.
