Barolo Faletto 2016
94 points, “A massive wine from Serralunga, this displays dense cherry and red-fruit aromas that are solid and brooding. Full-bodied with firm tannins that are chunky now, this has immense concentration and force.” – Decanter Magazine
“Piemonte produced excellent quality wine in 2016”, according to Jancis Robinson, which ratchets up the demand for top Barolo like this massively. Famed for his ability to select the finest fruit, the bespectacled Bruno Giacosa was a sad loss to the fine wine world when he passed away in January 2018, making wines like this even more sought-after. Crafted from the estate’s own vineyards, although volumes were up on previous vintage, most of this wine was long ago squirrelled away into the cellars of collectors.
The Falletto vineyard is iconic in Langhe. This natural amphitheatre protects the low-yielding vines, creating an optimum microclimate. Dense and rich, expect concentrated cherry, rolling tobacco, plum pie and a glorious combination of tar and salt, almost as if the smell of a new road being laid in the distance is being wafted towards you on a sea breeze. But be warned, this vintage needs time. This is definitely one to file away into the cellar and come back to in a couple of years.
