Every region of Italy touches the outside, be that via coastline or a border with another country, except Umbria, which is marooned in the middle. This is the very heart of the county, but in wine terms it gets completely overshadowed by its neighbour Tuscany, despite producing some excellent wines. But that’s great news for wine drinkers, because the under-the-radar and under-valued nature means the wines are often innovative and offer remarkable value for money.
Goccia’s 3Q is just such a wine. An unoaked blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, it’s summery, fresh and pulsing with red cherry, blackberry, raspberry and dark chocolate. Goccia means “drop” in Italian, and this is a tasty little drop that we’ll be drinking with barbeques, light dinners and Italian classics all summer long. And although we know its shameless name dropping, 3Q was recently served at a charity dinner in Edinburgh hosted by Michelle Obama.
