35 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky Special Release 2018
“The oldest and most expensive single malt in the [Diageo Special Release 2018] line-up, and fully justifying its pole position.” – Scotch Whisky Magazine
Only 3,276 bottles were created of this Caol Ila. Distilled in 1982 – think the birth of the Commodore 64, the Barbican Centre and Prince William and the rebirth of the Mary Rose – the nectar was filled into a mixture of hogsheads and butts made of American and European oak. There it was left to mature for 35 years before being bottled at cask strength as a limited edition for the Diageo Special Release 2018. Pulling the stopper, you’ll discover green olive brine, baked apple, poached pear, clementine zest, black pepper, layers of royal icing and marzipan, panettone, salted caramel, granola and the lingering smoke of country pubs in winter in the halcyon days.
Caol Ila – pronounced ‘cull-eela’ – means “Sound of Islay” and refers to the position of the distillery near Port Askaig overlooking the water that separates the island from neighbouring Jura. Founded in 1846, the distillery has had a tumultuous history. But it has thoroughly earned its fame, not just for its high-quality Single Malts, but for its importance in blends such as Johnnie Walker, Black Bottle and our beloved Compass Box.
