Introducing the hidden paradise of black rock…

Every year since 2001, Diageo has unveiled its Special Releases – a limited-edition series of highly collectable and sought-after Scotch whiskies exploring the breadth and depth of their portfolio. What makes them so exciting is Diageo’s unparalleled ability to cherry-pick anything from a lost barrel produced at a ‘ghost’ distillery to an experimental expression from a world-renowned brand. These are one-of-a-kind bottlings that are not to be missed…

Curated by Diageo’s Master Blender, Dr Craig Wilson, the 2022 Special Releases collection is entitled ‘Legends Untold Chapter 2’. These cask-strength whiskies take inspiration from the mysterious mythological creatures said to inhabit the lands around the distilleries chosen. The bottles were designed by two illustrators, Kevin Tong and Ken Taylor, and might well be the most colourful and vivid yet. Each bottle carries a QR code, providing the owner access to a “multi-sensory experience” of legends and tales from the distilleries, plus innovative cocktail ideas. Fans of Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and Scotch of course will find much to love here.

Cardhu 16 Year Old Special Release 2022 was finished in Jamaican pot still rum casks. It was inspired by a legend of the day the ancient black rock beneath Cardhu cracked open and an almost tropical warmth rushed forth. Biting wind through the heather turned into an exotic breeze carrying aromas of passionfruit, pineapple and hot sun. Sadly, at midnight the chasm closed, leaving just the Scotch distilled that day as the only record of the unusual events. This Cardhu has an unexpected tropical sweetness, combining lemon zest, pink grapefruit, juicy mango, white grape, spiced pineapple, ripe plantain, toffee, oak and warming pepper. We recommend enjoying it in a tropical paradise, but if that’s not possible, then maybe just with Caribbean food and a drop or two of water to douse the heat of that 58% ABV.

Helen Cumming began creating whisky in an illicit still near Archiestown in Speyside back in 1811. She would sell bottles to passers-by through her window. Becoming licensed 13 years later, this endeavour would become Cardhu – the first distillery to be pioneered by a woman. During its history it has been owned by William Grant (creators of Glenfiddich and Hendrick’s), Johnnie Walker and Sons and now Diageo.
