Calzo della Vignia Toscana Bianco 2015
This is the sort of wine that makes the knees of sommeliers tremble for two reasons. Firstly, out of sheer joy. Secondly, because what on Earth is it?
Manfred Ing, a South African winemaker at the highly respected Chianti producer Querciabella, found an abandoned vineyard on Isola del Giglio – a small island in the Tyrrhenian Sea just off the coast of Tuscany. In 2013, he started to create wine from the Ansonica grape, also known as Inzolia. His production in 2015 was just 900 bottles, so you’ve stumbled across something pretty rare.
Fermented on the skins for three months and matured for several more in old French casks, it’s super pure with a little dry tannin grip. A gourmet combination of lime, pineapple, grapefruit, peach, apricot, mango, apple skins and pear drops, coupled with sophisticated notes of sea salt, white pepper, beach pebbles, desiccated coconut, marmalade and hay. This intriguing wine is one to enjoy on its own or with your ‘nerdier’ wine-loving friends. However, it’s also exceptional with buttery white fish, nutty salads, leftover turkey or roasted root vegetables.
