Barolo 2014 Magnum 1500ml
91+ points, “The 2014 Barolo is a very pretty wine, and one of the overachievers of the year… Ceretto's 2014 could turn out to be a real surprise.” – Antonio Galloni
17+ points, “Still a little tight, but gorgeous balance and great freshness and tension.” – Jancis Robinson’s Purple Pages
In the cooler 2014 Ceretto didn’t bottle their outstanding crus of Brunate or Bricco Rocche, choosing instead to use that fruit in their straight Barolo DOCG. As a result, this magnum delivers above and beyond what you might expect. Normally a relatively easy-going wine, in this vintage is much more tightly wound, buzzing with pent up energy. Dried cherries, blackberries, hibiscus, Chinese five spice, rose petals, tea leaves, creamy oatmeal, tobacco, truffle, liquorice and freshly tarred roads; as you can tell it’s already deeply complex and is only going to get better in this magnum. This could prove to be one of the big steals of this vintage.
Ceretto was established in the 1930s by brothers Bruno and Marcello; this dynamic duo managed to pin down some of the most valuable and historically significant plots in the Barolo in Piedmont. The company is now run by their children Lisa, Roberta, Alessandro and Federico. Despite being a traditional family business, they are incredibly forward thinking. All of the vineyards are either organic or are being converted that way; they follow biodynamic farming methods; currently incorporating four wineries, their empire is growing; their winemaker is actually an Aussie called Dave Fletcher who makes incredible Nebbiolo on both sides of the planet; and they also own a three-Michelin-starred restaurant called Piazza Duomo in Alba. They are famed for their elegant wines and modern Piedmont style and have developed a cult following as one of the region’s under-the-radar stars.
