Vernaccia di San Gimignano 2018
San Gimignano is a stunning medieval town perched on a hillside in Tuscany, famed for its soaring towers, breath-taking architecture and white wines made from the grape variety Vernaccia, a local speciality. Although Vernaccia di San Gimignano may not be a household name in the UK, this unassuming white wine’s claim to fame is that it was the very first Italian wine to be awarded Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) status, before the likes of heavy hitters like Brunello di Montalcino and Barolo. Not satisfied with that though, the area kept upping the quality and was eventually awarded Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG), making it officially one of Italy’s finest and most coveted white wines.
Cesani is a family-owned business that was born when Guido and Annunziata bought a small piece of land 6km from San Gimignano. It started off purely as subsistence farming, but when the estate passed to their son Vincenzo, it began to garner a reputation for the immense quality of the wines and olive oils he was producing. Letizia Cesani is now at the helm, and the wine is made with a little help from oenologist Paolo Caciorgna, described by Italian wine expert Ian d’Agata (who writes for the highly respected wine website Vinous) as “one of Italy’s least known but very best winemakers”.
The Vernaccia di San Gimignano from Cesani is an absolute classic. Their vineyards sit a little higher than most, imparting fantastic freshness, lots of crunchy green apple and a wonderful note of bitter almonds on the finish. One of our go-to wines for a zippy aperitif, or for pairing with fresh fish, quinoa salads or spring vegetable risottos.
