92 points “A more fruit-driven and elegant approach to the 2016 vintage compared to the estate's Grand Vin. This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from Helan Mountain East of Ningxia is a blend of 10 parcels from the estate's 250ha of vineyards. Aged in oak barrels for 24 months the Purple Air has ripe black cherry and black peppers on the nose. Elegant coffee blackberry juice and prune on the palate with a touch of green capsicum. The tannins are fine-grained wrapping around a concentrated dark fruit core. The alcohol sits at 14.3% almost a degree lower than the Grand Vin. It can develop further but it's already drinking nicely.” – Decanter

Purple Air Comes from the East is the new premium wine from Château Changyu Moser XV sitting above their Grand Vin and seeking to set the benchmark for the Ningxia region. This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon started life as a ‘secret project’ but has now been released to the world. Only 6 300 bottles were made so it’s very hard to come by especially on these shores.

Jancis Robinson drew comparison with LVMH’s Ao Yun (a wine roughly 25% more expensive) saying “Very nice balance and already drinkable and very smooth. Good energy.” Not made in a fusty Old World style or an overblown New World blockbuster style this is all about freshness and elegance. The drinking experience is like electrified silk intense yet lithe. Matured in new French oak for two years what emerges is deep and dark buzzing with crème de cassis and blackberry fruit highlighted by cedar menthol tobacco vanilla and savoury complexity. The name – sometimes shortened to P.A.C.E. – derives from a Chinese idiom that suggests auspicious things are coming. Already being talked about in the same breath as Lafite’s Long Dai and Moët-Hennessy’s Ao Yun luck is definitely on the side of Château Changyu Moser XV new venture.

The Changyu Pioneer Wine Company or Château Changyu as it is more commonly known was founded in 1892 by Zhang Bishi. This entrepreneurial diplomat imported more than 500 000 vines from the US and Europe almost singlehandedly laying the foundation for Chinese wine production. It now has premium outposts throughout the country. In 2013 a fifteenth-generation winemaker from Austria called Laurenz Maria Moser V (a.k.a. Lenz) became involved with the company. Together they established Château Changyu Moser XV which can be found just west of Beijing near Yinchuan in Ningxia China’s most renowned wine-growing region. The estate has an impressive Bordeaux-style château and the wines are cut from a similar cloth. However with such a distinctive terroir – Ningxia is renowned for its harsh winters when temperatures can drop to -20°C – the wines present what Lenz calls “a unique kind of Chinese spice”. Don’t miss out on tasting these superior wines from China’s oldest and largest producer.
