Grand Vin Margaux 2014
92 points, “The 2014 La Gurgue is bold, powerful and delicious.” – Antonio Galloni, Vinous
Margaux’s Château La Gurgue is run by Claire Villlars-Lurton, the talent who has revived the fortunes of Château Ferrière (a rare Margaux with the smallest area of vines of any of the classified growths) and Château Haut-Bages Libéral (neighbour to Chateau Latour), and the wife of Gonzague Lurton from Château Durfot-Vivens, also in Margaux. She really knows how to pick her vineyards, as half of Château La Gurgue’s plots are surrounded by the vineyards of the First Growth Château Margaux, with the rest of the plots two minutes up the road in Soussans. She also has powerful friends. Eric Boissenot consults for her, he being a man who also helps with Latour, Lafite Rothschild, Margaux, Mouton Rothschild, Palmer, Pichon Longueville, Pichon Baron, Ducru-Beaucaillou, Léoville Barton, Brane Cantenac, Léoville Las Cazes, Gruaud-Larose and many more.
2014 was a Bordeaux vintage slightly dismissed initially by the critics at En Primeur, but once the wines were bottled scores were raised left, right and centre, sparking a flurry of eager fans to stock up. This is an excellent, and surprisingly powerful, example of the quality of this vintage. Expect brambles, cherry, plum, blueberry, tobacco, pencil shavings and smoking barbeque coals. Serve with grilled meats, Sunday roasts and anything with crispy blackened bits on the edge of the pan.£4.67 per 100.00ml
