Grand Vin Margaux 2003 - Château Margaux

Château Margaux

Grand Vin Margaux 2003

When Robert Parker tasted this in 2014 he said “Kudos to Château Margaux” and awarded it 98 points. James Suckling urged his readers simply: “Find the wine.”

Made by the late, great Paul Pontallier in the midst of a heatwave, this is astonishing stuff. Its seamless texture, opulent decadence and immense depth show that even in the hottest vintages a great winemaker can achieve perfect ripeness. But a youthful and feisty spiciness combined with a faint leathery gamey note come though the signature Margaux elegance, suggesting this still has a lot in the tank. In fact at least another decade, if not more.

The consistently high-scoring Château Margaux is such a venerated and sought-after wine that it takes the name of the appellation from which it comes; a commanding achievement. Revered for its perfumed elegance, floral bouquet and remarkable structure, respected wine critic Neal Martin put it best when he described Château Margaux as: “the most feminine and charming of the First Growths.”
