Le Saint-Estèphe de Montrose 2014
Le Saint-Estèphe de Montrose may be the estate’s third wine, but when the grapes were grown on Château Montrose’s exceptional terroir and the wine was crafted within the same winery, this is very much a force to be reckoned with. Once only available to employees at the winery, it’s wonderful that we can now get our hands on this fabulous wine. It’s a classic blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon that displays bright blackcurrant jam on toasted brioche, fresh red berries, hedgerow blackberries, toasted oak, tobacco and leather. Bordeaux in 2014 was one of those vintages that met with a muted response at En Primeur, but now in bottle has stunned the critics. This wine shows why. Elegant, powerful and remarkable value for money considering who its producer is; this is a red that’s not to be missed.
Producing powerful wines with immense longevity, Château Montrose is “Bordeaux’s archetypal St-Estèphe” according to Jancis Robinson. Often rivalling the First Growths this estate makes a mockery of its Deuxieme Cru Classé status. Robert Parker says the wines are “classics that beg comparison to such blockbuster, age-worthy wines as Château Latour.” Those with a keen eye will note the huge difference in price between Montrose and Latour.£4.67 per 100.00ml
