Grand Vin Saint-Estèphe 2009
Robert Parker has awarded this wine a perfect score of 100 points on three separate occasions. And fellow wine critic James Suckling agrees saying that Château Montrose 2009 is even better than the legendary 1990.
A drop-dead gorgeous Claret, full-bodied with silky tannins and refined flavours of blackcurrants, blackberries, black cherries, blueberries, violets, vanilla pods and cedar. Allow it to breath and some really interesting spices develop. This was one of the wines of the phenomenal 2009 vintage and is not to be missed. But when it comes to food matches it should be treated with the reverence that it deserves, think boeuf en croute, filet mignon, rack of lamb or game pie, avoid overly complicated and exotic sauces and let the Montrose take centre stage.
Producing powerful wines with immense longevity, Château Montrose is “Bordeaux’s archetypal St-Estèphe” according to Jancis Robinson. Often rivalling the First Growths this estate makes a mockery of its Deuxieme Cru Classé status. Robert Parker says the wines are “classics that beg comparison to such blockbuster, age-worthy wines as Château Latour.” Those with a keen eye will note the huge difference in price between Montrose and Latour.
