Grand Vin Pauillac 2006
95 points, “The 2006 Pichon Lalande, which blows away the 2005, represents a return to the velvety-textured, rich, sexy style most readers would associate with Pichon Lalande.” – Robert Parker
95 points, “One of the most pleasant and unexpected surprises in this tasting, the 2006 Pichon Lalande is gorgeous… Dark, powerful and intense, the 2006 possesses exceptional balance.” – Antonio Galloni
Created in the year that inspired the Rouzauds – one of the wine world’s most powerful families and owners of Champagne Louis Roederer, Domaines Ott, Ramos Pinto, Maison Delas and Champagne Deutz – to take over this prestigious Left Bank château. And it’s not hard to see why they chose to. This red is voluminous, dark and brooding. They forewent the usual splash of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc in this vintage, making this quite an unusual wine that will appeal to wine aficionados.
Château Pichon Lalande 2006 smoulders with blackberry, blackcurrant, chocolate, coffee beans, liquorice, plum jam and a waft of cigar smoke. It’s drinking beautifully now, but will continue to improve over the next two decades. Save it for a special occasion and pair with something dark, slow-cooked and heavy.
To give it its full name the ‘super second’ Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is one of Pauillac’s big stars, in spite of the exceedingly stiff competition. Robert Parker considers it “one of Pauillac’s most consistently brilliant wines”, with the ability to “rival the three famous First Growth of this commune”, something that it frequently does. Fellow wine critic Antonio Galloni goes as far as saying that this producer is “arguably the single hottest château on Bordeaux’s Left Bank right now.” In short, this is not to be missed.
