Fleur de Thénac Rouge 2015
Château Thénac can be found to the east of Bordeaux in Périgord – a region famed for its picturesque countryside, impressive medieval castles, black truffles, foie gras and of course the Lascaux Caves. This winery seems to manage to bottle that combination of rich history, great outdoors and splash of decadence.
Billionaire businessman Roman Abramovich famously changed the fortunes of Chelsea Football Club with heavy investment. His best friend and business partner Eugene Shvidler is doing something similar at Château Thénac in Bergerac. If Bordeaux is the fine wine world’s Premier League, then they need to watch out for this new challenger. Shvidler called in the experts, receiving consultation from some of Bordeaux’s legends, including Denis Durantou of Château l’Eglise-Clinet in Pomerol and Hubert de Boüard, the co-owner of Angélus in Saint-Émilion.
With friends like these, this is very much a winery to watch. Fleur de Thénac is the estate’s second wine. A previous vintage of theirs has already been chosen by Virgin Atlantic to be served on their Upper Class flights, whilst the 2015 has nuzzled its way into the range at Harvey Nichols – and deservedly so.
It’s well documented that 2015 was an outstanding vintage in Bordeaux. Down the road in Bergerac, it was just as good. In fact, Château Thénac called it their “perfect year”. Fleur de Thénac 2015 is a thoroughly modern Bordeaux-style red. Created from a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, half of it is aged in French oak to add Christmassy cinnamon and ginger spices, while the other half is kept in stainless steel to retain its freshness and the purity of the cherry, plum and blackberry fruit. The splash of Malbec seems to add a light chocolaty note, like a dusting of cocoa, plus a twist of black pepper. Wines at this price-point rarely have the pedigree of this refined and stylish red.
