Grand Vin Haut-Médoc 2014
Some things never go out of fashion, because it’s hard to beat an old-school classic. And that’s exactly what Château Cantemerle is. The last wine to be added to the Bordeaux wine Official Classification of 1855, but it remains one of the first thoughts in the minds’ of Claret drinkers.
You know how if you ask someone to draw a house, they’ll sketch a door in the centre, four windows, a roof and a chimney, despite the fact that you rarely see houses like that? Well this is the Bordeaux equivalent; a classic Claret that’s everything you conjure up in your mind when you think of the world’s most famous wine region. Cedar, cassis, kirsch, smoke, tobacco, dried herbs and a glorious floral note; match this Haut-Médoc with similarly classic dishes like roast beef, rosemary and garlic roasted lamb, game in season, cassoulet, char-grilled vegetables and garlicky mushrooms.
2014 was a vintage slightly dismissed initially by the critics at En Primeur, but once the wines were bottled scores were raised left, right and centre, sparking a flurry of eager fans to stock up. So don’t miss out on this little treat.
