Lalande-de-Pomerol 2011 - Château La Fleur de Boüard

Château La Fleur de Boüard

Lalande-de-Pomerol 2011

93 points, “This is something of a fruit bomb – remarkable given the vintage – with rich, exuberant fruit flavours backed up by sweet, well integrated tannins… A wine with a lot more to give.” – Tim Atkin MW

90 points, “The 2011 La Fleur de Boüard is a rich, full-bodied, ripe, heady, satisfying effort. Big, chewy and delicious, it showcases super-ripe Merlot picked late from small yields. In a relatively short period of time, Hubert de Boüard has created a reference point for how great Lalande-de-Pomerol can be. When tasted 10-15 years after the vintage, de Bouards wines consistently prove his conviction that he is sitting on a special terroir, even though this appellation is a humble one compared to his nearby neighbours, Pomerol and St.-Emilion.” – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

Hubert de Boüard de Laforest is obviously most famous for being the co-owner of Château Angélus in Saint-Émilion. However, the estate he and his family have owned in Lalande-de-Pomerol since 1998 should not be overlooked, especially when rare back vintages like this crop up.

Château La Fleur de Boüard is considered by many a junior version of the legendary Angélus, but with a substantially lower price tag. It is crafted using predominantly Merlot grapes from 25-year-old vines grown on the plateaus of Néac and Pomerol, plus a splash of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc for backbone and aromatics. This big red wine spends 18-24 months in oak and is bottled without fining or filtration, making it vegan friendly – a bit of a rarity in Bordeaux. Expect a modern Claret with silky tannins, rich concentration and a fine texture. Black cherry, blackberry, plum and blueberry fruit mingle with flourishes of cocoa, violets, crème de cassis and smoke; it makes us want to break out some recipes from Larousse Gastronomique and create something slow-cooked and French.

Following the incredible vintages in 2009 and 2010, it was always going to be difficult for 2011 to measure up. However, Château La Fleur de Boüard Lalande-de-Pomerol 2011 is now at its peak and shows just what a skilled winemaker can do in a challenging year.
